A Few Words About Know Thyself, Heal Thyself
How we started, what our mission is and why we do what we do
Greetings everyone!
and I realised that we hadn't properly introduced this publication we call Know Thyself, Heal Thyself to those of you who aren't familiar with it (because although many of our Medium friends have joined us here, there are a lot of new faces here too). So we decided that an introductory post would be useful. How it all started
Know Thyself, Heal Thyself was set up in 2019 on Medium as a space for me to heal and share my voice. Initially, I published my own essays, and then I invited other writers to contribute. The publication took off during the pandemic, and since then we have continued to expand, creating prompts, writing challenges, and collaborations. I quickly realised that I wanted to encourage a sense of community, a place where people would feel safe to share their voices and support each other. I've collaborated with several editors throughout the years, but it wasn't until May joined KTHT in August 2024 that I truly found a perfect fit. Each of us has different skills, and we balance each other out.
Our mission
Know Thyself, Heal Thyself began by publishing articles on spirituality. It then transformed into a safe haven for personal essays and poetry on self-awareness, growth, life lessons and overcoming hardships. We worked with thousands of writers on Medium and grew our community to 20K followers. KTHT had actually become part of the Boost Nomination Program in June 2024, and we were publishing outstanding pieces of work. However, due to some platform adjustments and our desire to maintain our independence as a publication, we made the decision to join Substack about two weeks ago. We are now set to continue publishing essays, expand our reach and work with writers from across the globe. May will be explaining the ins and outs of our collaborations and guidelines in more detail in an upcoming post, so stay tuned for that one.
Why Know Thyself, Heal Thyself?
We value truth—the truth that so many of us have been holding back, afraid to let ourselves be heard, but which is so necessary to let out in order to heal. We believe that in doing so we not only heal parts of ourselves but also inspire others to do the same and remind them that they're not alone. We're convinced that if a butterfly flapping its wings in one part of the world can set off a chain of events that leads to a tornado in another part of the world, then the words someone shares can resonate with a buried memory, unlock a long-forgotten emotion in the reader, and act as a catalyst for healing.
Want to join us?
We are currently accepting new contributors. If you want to join us, message May or I, and we will guide you through the process. To see what we accept, check our published essays. We place a huge emphasis on personal experience, authenticity and vulnerability, so make sure these elements aren't missing from your essays. You can also check our KTHT chat threads for updates, prompts and more.
Thank you
May & I would like to thank our subscribers and readers for all your support. We appreciate you, and we wouldn't be where we are without each and every one of you. We look forward to seeing where this Substack journey takes us. Much love.
