I was taken aback when May, my co-editor, asked about our March Medium features, and suddenly I remembered it was a new month—bills, spring cleaning, and prompts all needed attention.
They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Nature fights the last fierce battles of winter while we patiently await the gentle arrival of new life and warmer times. It's deeply symbolic of what we may be experiencing on a deeper level—a period of turmoil followed by peace.
We've still got one foot in winter and one in spring, and it can feel confusing at times. You feel like the transition has started, but you haven't really emerged yet. You're the cocoon and the butterfly at the same time, and that shift, that gray area, can teach us a lot about ourselves.
This month's prompts focus on just that. This is a special month in so many ways, and it offers so many opportunities for reflection and writing. It makes room for our stories to be told. Above all, it's a month of renewal, and what better way to help a writer renew than with some powerful prompts?
Please note that only paid subscribers' prompts are themed. The free ones are standard personal essay prompts, but they still offer the opportunity to dive deep and get creative. If you find one that you like and decide to use it in your writing, please remember to tag
and I.Free subscribers prompts:
Write about how you handled/recovered from a severe illness/injury/accident.
Write about the day when your hard work truly paid off.
Write about the consequences of losing your temper and how you made amends.
