Oh Diana! I’m still hoping against hope that Medium will survive…though I have begun writing here. Prose as opposed to my poetry. I’ve made relationships I treasure on Medium and don’t want to lose them
Not much of an answer for you, is it? I will read others responses with great interest
Medium is where I got my start sharing my writing and it's been so sad to see what's happening with earnings lately. Still hoping they can turn it around, but also looking toward Substack as an exciting opportunity with (hopefully) more support for writers.
I don't know much about Substack but believe in you and your work (KTHT). Therefore, I believe in your decision. So, yes, move to Substack. I am personally not happy with my answers for Medium, which went unanswered. I wrote them an email (and published a story) with 6 questions to clarify the engagement rules, which seem quite arbitrary to me.
I paid an annual FOM subscription fee last October to show appreciation to writers; unfortunately, they can't downgrade my membership and pay me back pro rata.
Xoxo, Chingmay
P.s. My comment to Scott’s story was one of the ones that was ignored.
Hi Chingmay! Good to see you on here. I agree, their policies can be confusing and seem arbitrary. That's why so many of us have moved to Substack. I'll be adding you as a contributor here today (you'll get an invitation via email). Hugs!
Thank you. I read that for people to keep both platforms, it’s best to first publish on Substack and then publish it a day or two later on Medium, providing a canonical URL for it to avoid web crawlers finding it as duplicate content.
I just started here on Substack, mostly just reposting my Medium work in parts with links back to the Medium stories so readers can read the entire piece there. I don't have paid subscriptions here on Substack, so the idea was to drive traffic back to Medium. There are some great people/writers/artists here on Substack who aren't on Medium, so I'm glad I'm here to meet them, too. I still spend most of my time on Medium but I don't think it hurts to have another platform, too.
I have transitioned to Substack. It’s a process. You don’t want to lose the valuable connections you have spent 5 years on Medium developing. At this point,Medium cannot see my shift of focus but i lost faith in them a year ago.
I stay around because i value my friendships like you. Claire and others. But we are all seeing the same thing. A Facebook esque shift. They are not being transparent and honest at least to me.
It's all part of the process, Diana. It might take some time, but you’ve already succeeded on Medium, and I’m confident you’ll thrive on Substack too. Personally, I prefer it here—no stress about earnings (at least for now, with my newsletter still free). Welcome aboard!
I am still learning this platform, but since Medium completely stopped paying me, it is definitely time to explore. I will follow you here. I appreciate the writers in your publication and also value your inspiring prompts. I wish Medium would right the sip, but unfortunately, I believe it is sinking and, at this point, unethical.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for following us here on Substack, Libby! We're building a community of writers here on Substack and would love for you to consider contributing some of your KTHT essays. Let us know if you're interested.
This time, I'll say yes. Even if Medium fixes things, it will never be the same. Substack is quite difficult for me, I guess it will take me months to get used to it and find exactly how it works best, but I'll do it.
I think you could import all the followers or subscribers from Medium to Substack and just discose it beforehand. That should give a good base to start. I think it’s good to be prepared. I have been crossposting my stories from my Simple Story Seekers Publication from Medium to here (Simple Story Seekers Substack). I’m just not sure how writers would submit stories or maybe guest post to the pub.. I haven’t tried it yet.
Diana, It's a terrific experiment! KTHT was the first publication that featured my writing on Medium. It will always hold a special place in my heart, and you remain my favorite editor of all time. I wish you the best whatever you decide. I've been sending my newsletter on Substack for years. I turned on paid subscriptions earlier this year due to the downward trend in pay on Medium. They say Substack is a long game. We will see! Wishing you the best!
Aww, Sandra! It means a lot to hear that KTHT played a special role in your writing journey.
I cherish the memories of working together on Medium and the connections we've made.
I'm glad to hear that your Substack is thriving. I'm taking a page from your book and embracing the long game. Wishing you all the best with your newsletter as well!
P.S: We've sent you a co-author invitation via email. We're currently migrating some of our top Medium content to Substack, and we'd love for you to consider transitioning some of your KTHT essays as well.
I have the same thought of moving all of my content here, Diana. But again, I'm not entirely sure that would be best as I'd leave a portion of my friendship there. As far as I've learned, Substack has a learning arc that is quire different from Medium. Your transition may take a while.. but go where your heart tells you! I'm on both platforms so it doesn't matter as much for me!
I feel the same, Adrian! I've built a community there, and it's hard to imagine leaving that behind. I believe we can maintain an online presence on both for the time being and see how things play out...Substack has a different feel, and I'm still figuring it out myself.
I have had a free Substack account for as long as I have been with Medium, so the transition would be smoother for me. If you are not already engaged there, the change may take some time. Quite honestly, I am also considering it with the climate and pay changes on Medium lately. Go with your heart. As you mentioned, we do this as passionate writers but not as volunteers.
That makes sense. It's great that you've been preparing for this transition for a while. I will gradually become more active on here, too. It's a process that will take time. I'm so glad you're on here, though! I deeply value our connection.
I will also look at transitioning to a paid account here. Medium has not paid as I had hoped, and many people are becoming upset with some of the changes over the past year. Have you switched to a paid account here already?
Hi Carlo! Yes, they totally can. The difference is that every Substack pub has its own way of doing things. Here at KTHT, we mainly focus on essays. Right now, we're keeping things open to build our community, so everyone can read everything. But contributors still get awesome exposure – people see their work and might even subscribe to their own newsletters! We're planning to start financially rewarding contributors soon too, as we grow :)
If you're curious about submitting something, feel free to shoot me a message. It's very nice to see you on here:)
I'm brand new to Substack, and Medium was my home base. It saddens me where Medium is headed, and I lost my thunder over there.
I am excited to figure out Substack and look forward to many new (and familiar) connections.
I understand completely how it feels to lose that spark on Medium. It's a tough transition.
Yeah, true.
I feel hopeful that we can support each other over here 🫶🏼

Jenine, so happy to see you on here! I understand completely. I've also built valuable relationships on Medium and hope to maintain those connections.
I'm curious to see how Medium evolves:)

Hi Diana, I haven’t gotten an email yet. I have a new story that I would like to submit.
Thank you. I read that for people to keep both platforms, it’s best to first publish on Substack and then publish it a day or two later on Medium, providing a canonical URL for it to avoid web crawlers finding it as duplicate content.

That's a very interesting approach! It's smart to diversify your platforms and reach a wider audience. Great seeing you on here, Maisie!:)
You're probably already in "wait and see" mode, I think both platforms need KTHT vibrations.
If Medium spirals into February on the same trajectory, then yep. Move the ship.
I'm curious to see how it all unfolds!

I totally understand your decision to move to Substack, Bob! I think we're all looking for more control and independence. I value our connection, too.
And hopefully we can continue here and move our work to the next level.

Thank you so much for your encouragement, Despina! And thank you for the warm welcome. It's great seeing so many familiar faces on here 😊

I think we are all asking ourselves the same question.
And for good reasons!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences, Gabriela. That's kind of what we have in mind with KTHT - guest posts, collabs, etc.
